The Effects of Exercise Types to Metabolic Syndrome in Middle-aged Women with Abdominal Obesity

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: This study suggests a better way for exercise for middle-aged woman who have abdominal obesity to identify how continuous exercise and a interval exercise can impact on body composition and metabolic syndrome risk when they burn the same calories(300kcal).

METHOD: The participants(22)were placed in two exercise groups, continuous(11) and interval(11) and assigned arbitrary exercises in a 15 - week program. The intensity of the exercises were determined by each participant¡¯s heart rate. In the continuous exercise group, there were no changes in heart rate. On the other hand, there were some changes in the increase and decrease of heart rates in the interval exercise group when constant intensive exercise was performed. All measured variables were calculated for the average and standard deviation and paired samples t-tests were used to find differences between changes before and after exercise. If statistical changes had occurred in the two groups, independent samples t-tests were used to find differences and to determine which group showed more changes. The significance level was set at a =. 05.

RESULT: First, as the result of change in body composition, it showed both a continuous and an interval exercise had statistically reduced weight and body fat. No statistical differences of weight and body fat were found when independent samples t-test was performed. The only part could be gotten interval exercise effectively was BMI. Second, it showed a statistical reduction of waist circumference, TC, TG, LDL-C and Glucose both in continuous and an interval exercise groups as a result of changing risk factors in metabolic syndrome. No statistical differences of TC, TG, LDL-C, and Glucose were found when independent samples t-test was performed. The only effective part of continuous exercise was HDL-C.

CONCLUSION: In summing up the results, it showed no statistically differences of weight, body fat, waist circumference, TC, LDL-C, TG and Glucose when independent samples t-test was performed. It showed interval exercise is a much better way to reduce BMI than continuous exercise. But in situations where there were increases of HDL-C, it showed continuous exercise is better than interval exercise.
